I'm judging solely from how nobody is willing to get near him in a melee, and everyone runs in a panic. But yes - setting him on fire goes way beyond the logic of "excessive self-defence" to deter triads from attacking protesters.

Yes. Stop the video at 30secs, just as he approaches the woman in the white t-shirt. He's clearly wielding a knife or a razor. And why would twenty people run away from one slightly-built man in panic like this, unless he posed a threat way beyond his small stature.
