Big picture — if among the trillions of government spending, a few billions actually go to fund enterprises for the improvement to the quality of life, and to sustain life in the solar system, then said libertarian and non-libertarians should be all in favor of supporting it.

Many technologies rose from developments relating to the space age. Having a technologically successful Mars colony will be no exception in that regard. For instance, I'm sure it will advance tech related to renewable energies.

the point he's making is that if we followed your advice of not going to space in the first place we wouldn't have satellites. so developing space technology is one of the right things to do.

You seem to fail to understand the basic difference between personal property and industrial capital. I've never expressed doubt that @elonmusk knows what he's doing, I just think it's reasonable that the American people get their share of the benefits for their contribution.

NASA paid SpaceX to develop a rocket and space capsule for them. The cost is gonna be cheaper for NASA, so basically it’s gonna eventually pay for itself. It’s SpaceX’s money, the public doesn’t need to have a share of it
