Getting to space needs ~Mach 3, but GTO orbit requires ~Mach 30. The energy needed is the square, i.e. 9 units for space and 900 for orbit.

@elonmusk is right. Please guys, 3x3=9, 30x30=900!

@elonmusk I understand the difference, however your first stage rocket wouldn't have achieved orbit either, before coming in for a landing? -
@TobiasVdb The F9 booster can reach low orbit as a single stage if not carrying the upper stage and a heavy satellite. -
@elonmusk@TobiasVdb And then refill it from the orbital tank station, attach the BEO capsule and .... conquer the solar system (mars first -
@elonmusk@TobiasVdb naked F9 stage to orbit:ideal usage for RTF stages . once in space:refill ,tug spacecrafts between planets,astromining?

@elonmusk Weightlessness has nothing to do with space. Orbital velocity at sea level would be zero G just by earth curvature, same as orbit.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. Undo

@elonmusk This explains the difference beautifully HT: https://www.reddit.com/r/spacex/comments/3xzn7s/my_previous_spacex_falcon_9_vs_blue_origin_new/ …pic.twitter.com/wV8Qoz0AhH

@elonmusk also landing at sea is a different animal, wind conditions vary. Blue origin hovered before landing, seemed lighter.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. Undo

@elonmusk size of your first stage looks larger and more unwieldy than blue origin, likely the distinction you made.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. Undo

@elonmusk:@JeffBezos deserved an unequivocal nod for being 1st to launch a reusable vehicle to space, not a lesson in energy costs to orbit -
@John_Gardi The lesson was for us, not@JeffBezos. Not all of us knew that this wasnt really that awesome. -
@ImNotARealPeron There's far better ways for@elonmusk to get that across then to start a 'flame trench' Twitter war (one sided).@JeffBezos -
@John_Gardi@elonmusk@JeffBezos Such as? Interview with mags that most ppl wont read? how?? -
@ImNotARealPeron:@elonmusk was in good form on The Late Show with@StephenAtHome... :)
