When you start the 1st Mars colony @elonmusk what documents would you recommend using to establish a governing system? U.S. Constitution/Bill of Rights? Universal Declaration of Human Rights? Humanist Manifesto? Atlas Shrugged? Against the State: An Anarcho-Capitalist Manifesto?

Horrible concept. A direct democracy means if 51% of the people wanted all your toys you would have no protection against them doing so. Our founding father’s abhorred a pure or direct democracy for that reason & developed a complex system that protects the rights of the minority
-
And yet the minorities are still fucked. I don't understand why people think the founding fathers are infallible.
-
I don't think so. The reason we are a constitutional republic and not a democracy is so the rights of the minorities are protected, they have the same rights as the majority, as they should. Democracy is just the tyranny of the majority.
-
Reality doesn't bear this out. If the founding fathers were so worried about minority rights would they have kept slaves and ruthlessly expanded into native territories. There is a huge disconnect between school history/civics class propaganda and reality
-
You're comparing a very specific scenario that doesn't hold any genuine relevance to the argument at hand. If anything, democracy is the only thing that has shown it's true colors through time in reality. Not constitutionalism.
-
The fact is, our system has failed to protect the rights of minority’s in any meaningful way each time it has had the opportunity. Minority’s have had to fight for every little piece of rights they have. It should never have been that way if our system was, in fact, designed to..
-
Protect the minority. Our systems design is actually to oppress the minority and allow business intrests to override the interests of the people, and make it appear that the system is actually neutral and interested in what’s best for the people.
-
That's the point of democracy, IMO. Not specific to American republican democracy or any other example. The only way to truly protect minorities is through immutable principles of free thought.

Direct democracy is normally too simple to work. It is hard to rule a country with binary answers and it is frustrating for its people when they think both options are stupid. We need a system that allows compromises between politicians.
-
Not too simple. Switzerland is a direct democracy and works quite well.
-
Has a constitution and parliament, and yes popular initiative for referendums. Not quite direct democracy.
-
Buddy, I live in Switzerland. I should know better than you, right?
-
Yes you should. But there are the non direct elements I described, or have I been misled?
-
-
I love the Swiss model. It is politically incorrect and rightfully so while eliminating individual shaming. Technology advances that are currently available significantly reduce the need for a full time representative. Only problem I see is now media shapes the opinion and vote.

Yes. Make them short and vague, so that the wealthy and powerful can interpret them as they wish. This is how you create aristocracies and fascist dictatorships. But then, you already knew that.

Uh. No thanks. We don’t need more pseudo intellectual libertarianism masquerading as viable political discourse... this is pure elitist bs
