Useful thread on the Auckland Uni debacle. I agree- this is how it works. Journos should work hard to widen our contact books, but those go-to people are go-to for a reason.

My personal policy is to look outside the star commenter roster whenever I can. But sometimes only a go-to person will do. Long before Covid, I approached
@SiouxsieW
to comment on a difficult investigation - because I knew she was brave and might stick her neck out. She did.

- I found out not long ago that the first interview we did together was his first ever media interview. You’d never have known. Of course, both have specific knowledge relevant to Covid now, but being able to talk - quotably talk - is also a public asset
