    considering almost nothing else in the US works - I would believe it!

    The crazy thing is that we are being asked to believe that the richest country in the world cannot hold a simple election without gross incompetence. That’s just the baseline without getting all tin-foil hat conspiratorial with it. Of course the timing is curious.

    Stronger rent control means more people can stay in their communities (obviously good). If nothing else changes, it also means fewer homes available for immigrants, domestic movers, and future generations. Rent control *increases* the need to build more homes. We have to do both.

    Berlin renters just won a 5-year universal rent freeze. It was a compromise—they were / still are demanding mass expropriation of big landlords (who own over 3,000 apartments). As a Montreal renter during this ongoing housing crisis, all I can say is 👀👀👀

    We need philosophy because no one was ever radicalized into revolutionary politics from learning mechanical engineering. Technical skills will only make the system more efficient, but we always need at least the possibility of reimagining the system entirely.

    One of my major frustrations about housing debate is that people aren't honest about this reality. A large number of people, across the ideological spectrum, just want growth and other people to go away--they just won't admit that's what motivates them.

    The leadership of California is clear in that they believe ever-increasing returns on real estate and an exodus of new generations of Californians to surrounding states is a good thing

    I made the mistake of following the hashtag again and hoo boy the arguments against are pretty much the least coherent I've ever seen in a policy debate. Toxic mix of misinformation, ideological rigidity, selfishness, and just plain stupidity.

    Electric vehicles are only 2% of market share in France, and yet, Paris is reducing car pollution faster than any city on earth. Oh! They also have a $20,000 SUV tax. Fer reals. EVs are looking increasingly like an auto industry tactic for (more) predatory delay.

    Since *2014* Paris has reduced car traffic by 22% and reduced nitrogen dioxide emissions by 11%. Why? City's massive implementation of new bikeways, elimination of significant space previously used by cars, creation of pedestrian plazas, & major improvements in transit service.
