A thing I really really don't want to see is people ""calling out"" or making fun of teens/kids getting sad/upset over missing what some of you might consider trivial things due to COVID-19. For example: prom; high school sports; concerts/movies; school plays/concerts/events.

I haven't seen it on Twitter but I've seen it on Facebook and like....stop being gross. Stop telling kids it's wrong for them to have feelings about their own lives; stop trivializing kids' reactions & emotions. Stop telling kids they aren't important.

Like, my kid's birthday is April 7th and since Spain's pushed the quarantine period out to at least April 15th she'll miss being able to bring in snacks for her class to celebrate and I've reassured her it's not at all wrong to feel upset about something like that.

And by the way: I'm not talking about parents who call schools complaining about their kids not having a prom or whatever. They can suck a doorknob slathered with old egg salad

While you're here! If you are at all able, please consider sending a small tip to help me care for my cats. I run a kind of unofficial cat sanctuary in Southern Spain and things are very much weird right now w/the quarantinehttp://ko-fi.com/ellegato

Absolutely agree but their parents shouldn’t be advocating for these events and I think that’s a lot of what people are finding frustrating, like...y’all.

-
Yeah that's an entirely different situation. Definitely call out parents being dinguses

No one should be called out for being sad for missing prom. However, if they are like the Florida spring break idiots who go “if I get it, I get it, YOLO” then I have no qualms about shaming them either. I’m sad about things but it doesn’t mean ignoring consequences.

And I'm not a psychologist or anthropologist, but I've got to wonder what the effects really are of losing things that are expected rewards, some of our cultural markers of adulthood, and a means of closure/finality, esp combined w/ sudden changes in social structure and faith.

imo even adults are allowed to be sad about things they are missing?! As long as we're not saying it's MORE IMPORTANT than people's lives, we're allowed to lament anything that brings us sadness or frustration!
