My kid is 10. Last night she slept over her friend's house. Her friend is a 10-year-old-boy. My husband made the mistake of mentioning this to his mother who now, I think, is going to use sheer righteous rage to teleport to Spain and murder me for allowing such a SIN

Glad to see this thread has resonated. I just think that this whole enforced separation between boys and girls at some arbitrary age makes it easier for boys to dehumanize girls. Boys being told that there's something that makes girls unfit for equal friendships is dangerous

parents enforcing the idea that friendships between boys and girls suddenly become ticking time bombs are encouraging Bad Things like -compulsory heterosexuality -the dehumanization of girls by boys -continued structural inequalities between boys and girls -the gender binary

10 is not too young for kids to know that they are -queer -trans -nonbinary enforcing heterosexuality & the gender binary leaves these kids feeling even more alone and isolated than they already are

Anyway I'm not a perfect parent but I trust my child and I refuse to make her afraid of herself by planting the idea that her growing up makes her somehow "dangerous" or less human than her friends who happen to be boys

Also, i think research has shown that the vast majority of sexual experimentation by young teenagers is with friends of the same gender, so maybe you should tell her its the girlfriends your mum in law should worry about.

I’m really glad my parents let me spend the night at my best friend’s house even though he’s a boy. Those were some of the best nights. (Even though both his parents and mine lowkey shipped us which was weird, we were 15-17 though not 10)

100% this. I would've ended up a lot worse in a lot of ways if many of my closest friends over the years hadn't been girls/women

I was absolutely having sleepovers with my best boy friend at that age and like...my parents were the most deeply paranoid parents in the world and they were still chill with it.

All of my closest friends were guys growing up and even now. My parents knew this and never discouraged me from having them over for sleepovers or even when they were out. Guy/Girl friendships should be encouraged more and not sexualised
