Settle an argument: is Alien a horror film? Give reasons why pls
-

Because then it’s sci-fi?
-
Yes. Horror is predicated on the fear of the other, the unfamiliar in the world as we know it – space, we already don't know it

Why would Alien *not* be a horror film but The Thing - which also features an alien, and is set in almost equally inhospitable environment, but in Earth - be horror?

She's a Guardian writer, argument, nuance and themes are hard concepts to grasp.

I also like to set up arbitrary genre restrictions. Romcoms cannot feature bicycles.

Agreed, two wheels* do not support the creation of a will they/won’t they narrative... * I may make an exception for a tandem ride, possibly in Holland

ALIEN is a film that follows the tropes of the classic haunted house film, but simply sets the location aboard a spaceship. The fact that it’s in space is not important. ALIEN could be set in a house on a hill. ALIENS, however, an action movie. <1/2>

Space is an unknown for all of humanity, and the unknown equals horror. Space-set cinema like EVENT HORIZON and LIFE FORCE are undeniably horror films before they could be considered sci-fi. <2/2>
