Heard this story about how the bodies of people who die of thirst in the desert are often found carrying full bottles of water because they’re afraid that if they drink it they won’t have enough left to make it out of the desert

This is a really beautiful piece. I don't think it should be seen as particularly provocative, but it might challenge some preconceptions...

Here's my first column for @NewStatesman on what it is like to date a couple. Really meant a lot to me writing this one, so would love people to have a read newstatesman.com/culture/life/2

Without exception, the pieces of mine that have had the biggest response, that people still bring up to me years later, had little by way of "timeliness" or relevance to the news cycle – they were good ideas that I personally clicked with, which were then carefully edited

Honestly my impression, from writing and commissioning, is that time-sensitivity and "pegs" are overrated, at least in lifestyle/culture/human interest writing. If it's thoughtful, well-written and interesting, people will click – and more time definitely helps with all three

For those piling onto Victoria: this is how pretty much every digital news outlet works, and it's good of her to demystify it! Whether it's really necessary for us all, as an industry, to sprint to get up the first thought we can find, the fastest we can, is a different question

The dream: If you want to pitch to @IndyVoices, do it between 7-8am that day on something hot and new and current and fast-moving and trending. And if we both agree on a commission, file 600-800 words within two hours. 🤩

She may have been Britain's shortest ever serving PM, but turns out she likes writing VERY long articles. Liz Truss to unveil her 3,000 word essay defending her short stint in No10 tomoz. Expect her to defend her policies and rage against the machine.

On my nighttime walks I've noticed a striking number of people still with their Christmas decs up – laziness or an attempt to generate cheer by any means possible?

An arresting quote: “Even... behaviors that I think we broadly as a culture would think of as healthy, advantageous behaviours now have become drugified such that they are made more potent, more accessible, more novel, more ubiquitous”

He included the native American character "deliberately... to provoke discussion" of authors writing outside their own experience; a sensitivity reader duly suggested some corrections; now he complains of being "hurt" and has those complaints published. Can everyone get a grip!!

Well, after an incredible 1.5 years, BDG has decided it is done with Gawker 2.0. Can't say enough about how proud I am of the site and all the brilliant people who worked to create it, and what a staggering shame this is. I had an absolute blast, and I love you.
