How'd we get here? BdB kept an admissions exam in place for 4-year-olds that no expert supported for most of his term - and now he's getting rid of gifted! This was an 8-year push by his 3 chancellors - but only Meisha Porter was able to convince him.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/08/nyregion/gifted-talented-nyc-schools.html …

What happens next? A lot of details aren't worked out, which means Eric Adams will be responsible for making the plan work. He has the power to change it significantly, though it'll be tricky in the first months of his mayoralty.

What are the pitfalls? City is planning accelerated education for all - ID'ing kids who excel at one subject and accommodating them within their normal classrooms or schools instead of separating them. That's a lofty goal, but REALLY hard to pull off. Some experts are skeptical

There's so much more to read about gifted + talented in NYC! I'd start here, because BdB for years ignored this recommendation from a task force he himself created and then...announced a very similar plan today!https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/26/nyregion/gifted-programs-nyc-desegregation.html …

If you have strong views on this, and I suspect you do, please read this rundown of what experts across the spectrum think the mayor should have done. It's worth getting a little wonky about this subjecthttps://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/09/nyregion/nyc-schools-gifted-education.html …

Weird that they are removing gifted programs, but trying to expand Advanced Placement programs everywhere. Doesn't that send a mixed message?
-
You're not necessarily wrong but note that the push is called "AP for All," and the goal is to give all NYC students access to at least 5 AP courses. Both decisions are consistent, at least in theory, with the goal of increasing access.

Controversial decision. But for many who have been separated from their peers due to a perceived lack of intelligence, a right one.
-
So the answer is to dumb down these kids in school so they can’t reach their potential? Unfortunately the reality is everyone is not an equal, especially when it comes to intelligence.
