A note on homeschooling pods. 75% of kids who attend NYC public schools are low-income. So while a lot of people on here feel like the conversation about pods is suddenly everywhere - it's not even relevant for the vast majority of kids in this city at least.

(I'm referring specifically to pods where families pay teachers to come into homes and teach/tutor)

Another thought on homeschooling pods. Twitter makes it seem like they are everywhere. But right now this is a story based almost entirely on anecdotes. We won't have any real data to tell us the scope of the issue until student/teacher enrollment data is finalized this fall

We will get quality education when we #DefundDOEFundEducation. DOE doesn’t have right to be sole provider of publicly funded education. Especially with their miserable track record. I’m still waiting for @nytimes headline: “DOE fails to educate NYC’s Black & Hispanic students.”

You’re right and that’s the problem: schools SAY they care about low income kids, but their actions show they don’t. As parents we r supposed to take risks and make sacrifices for our kids. Instead, we are FORCING our kids to make sacrifices for us! It’s awful. Open the schools

We are putting our kids in of these pods this fall. However, we would send them back to public school the day they take them back (in-person, full time.) Most parents are like us: this isn’t ideological, it’s practical. I support our public schools, WHEN they are fully open.

Did you really come onto a thread about families not being able to afford a pod, to strut about you affording a pod?

Clearly not a workable solution for the 75% of students from low-income households
