Well, Linux in automotive is for non safety related tasks. So, it strictly speaking, does not make cars run. But yes, Linux is a great swiss knife. Cheap and powerful. But always an over sized solution for many applictions. Including cars.
BTW, I love Linux. And the wrongly named embedded Linux.
