    As part of my advanced PhD-level research design course I had students create 'bad charts' using any kind of publicly available data. The worse looking chart, the better. This may be my most favorite assignment I've ever given.

    If you missed my online talk yesterday in the AATRN seminar on using template functions for persistence diagram featurization, the video is now on youtube!

    These come from collections of functions on the upper half plane with nice enough properties. Apply one to all the points in your diagram, sum those all up, rinse and repeat....

    Exercise 1. Define fresh numbers. Exercise 2. Show existence of fresh numbers by arguing that 11 is fresh. Exercise 3. Define freshest number and show 11 is a freshest number. Exercise 4. Show uniqueness of freshest number.

    The result is super fast to compute, plays nice with infinite diagrams (hello, fractals!), and has a ton of flexibility since the restrictions on the function collection are very reasonable.

    Hidden inside a mess of point-set topology and functional analysis is a very nice idea: that you can easily build representations of persistence diagrams that play nice with stats/ML via template systems.
