School question: Has anyone studied the impact of education-years lost in Europe during WWII? Seems that those countries and children did mostly fine over subsequent decades. Wonder if we are underestimating the resilience of kids? Maybe we need to change the messaging?

The research establishing the benefits of tutoring and summer school seems a lot more robust than the the research telling us about potential long-term organ issues in children and young adults from COVID. (because the virus is relatively new)

Seems that most of the dire predictions are based on a single study from Argentina during a teachers' strike. Extrapolating from that study is valid, but would assume the confidence intervals should be extremely wide

honestly, classroom learning is only one piece of the puzzle. While kids may not be in the classroom, most should be able to learn some life skills like cooking, budgeting, cleaning, resiliency. Kids will be fine if we continue to support & nurture them, provide food & shelter

weak. Sort of a giant opportunity lost to be afraid to ask questions that lead to more questions and possibly future policy solutions. How about year-round high school with work-study funding? Free community college. Just some of the suggestions smart folks offered. But thanks!

Private schools will stay open, so this “messaging” just applies to public schools. What happens when rich kids go to school and poor kids don’t?

Not even just privates - half the country. Many suburbs that are RIGHT NEXT TO cities with closed schools. We have nothing to compare this to.

yeah, today's children in the US are probably not going to be more traumatized than, say, Polish school children between the years 1939-45. that's so reassuring.
