    A new report says the world needs to cut emissions by half before 2030, and go carbon-neutral by 2050 if we want to avoid disaster. We’ll also have to change our behavior as individuals, which means we essentially need a restructuring of civilization.

    Holland was the same. My Protestant oma joined the Dutch resistance, married my Jewish Opa, and was disowned by her family for it. She risked her life every day smuggling people, intel, & supplies. Today, we include everyone she helped save from the camps in our extended family.

    Only about 2% of French civilians joined la résistance during the Nazi occupation. Everyone else (who wasn’t deported, conscripted or enslaved) just kind of went along with it.

    Analog shades.

    These magical sunglasses block all the screens around you. They block the wavelengths of light that comes from LED and LCD screens. Put them on and the TV in the sports bar seems to switch off; billboards blinking ahead seem to go blank.

    Like you, I have an infinite TBR list of articles, the “that sounds cool I’ll read it later” problem. BUT whenever writes something about the evolving relationship between science fiction and reality, it goes straight to the front of the queue. Must read.

    I finally wrote another article on science fiction's feedback loop with real tech and policy--this time looking at sci-fi's outsized influence on Ronald Reagan, from WarGames to Star Wars and more. Via :

    What if instead of militarized police forces the State spent that money, or 1/10 of that money, on squads of midwives, parental assistance and counseling, high-quality child care, big sibling and mentoring programs, afterschool activities, nature camps and green spaces?

    If we as a society believe that evil and anti-social behavior are for the most part not genetic but learned, poor nurture not poor nature, why don't we direct our societal resources to ensuring that everyone is nurtured?
