Some thoughts on Rabin’s legacy in light of the AOC kerfuffle: Rabin was (as many have pointed out) a complex character who evolved politically over time—not unlike Arafat and others. But it’s important not to overstate his evolution, which was political and not moral. /1

The fact that he was murdered by a Jewish extremist for allowing Palestinians autonomy in 19% of West Bank may say more about Israeli political culture than about Rabin’s legacy. No doubt Y. Amir hoped to stop momentum toward ending the occupation—and in that he succeeded. /END
