A privilege to be one of The London Library's Emerging Writers for 22/23 - working on an intersectional biography of the British landscape. Can't wait to hit the stacks & meet some amazing folk. Catch my blogs about the research experience writing this new rural

We stand in the middle of the road outside pa’s care place & howl. One of the other carers, snatching a cig under the beech, the ember glowing, gives a half hearted whoop & then joins in. A family coming towards us applaud when I point to the sky. The moon. The moon. The moon.

Today’s #SmallJoy365 is - try - yeah, I know that whole ‘do or do not, there is no try’ thing. Sometimes, ‘try’ is what I’ve got. Here for it. Yay. Try!

On January first last year, I wrote down 365 nice things to do, on little slips of paper, put them in an envelope and sealed it. Today, I opened the envelope, put all the slips into a jar and pulled one out (eat a piece of fruit). I aim to do one every day, for the whole year. 💖

I stayed up until 3:30. I read the book. It was excellent. 100% would read again. No regrets.

I’ve got a new to me book. I want to read it. But it looks so good I just know I’ll stay up far too late and feel sick with tiredness tomorrow. But I will have read the book. So. Book = Tired. But sleep = no book. It’s a dilemma. And yeah, moderation? I don’t know her.

Hey all my dear childhood friend whom many of you know lost everything last night in a house fire. Please consider giving generously. This is being organized by his sister in law. Five kids. Family is unharmed thank god.

Today’s #SmallJoy365 - count your blessings - ok. I wrote this at the beginning of 2022 - to remind me that, despite EVERYTHING, there are things to celebrate & be glad of. So. Yay for the booster jab I had this morning & the pair of Jays, that I think might nest next door.

Made a big mistake - phoned my bank BEFORE doing the nice thing. Have been on hold for 43 minutes. Plehh.

I started today with 27 things on my to do list. I have one thing left. ONE. And it is a nice thing. ONE. I will have a cup of tea and then do it. ONE! And then I will research/find/read a couple of books for the current wip. Oh my goodness. ONE. (Don’t anyone email me.)

Today’s #SmallJoy365 - cuddle a whale! - we’ve two whales, one is a pencil case from John Lewis (the fail whale - zip is on underside) & the pale whale, from who posts the most interesting things on her twitter account. No whale to cuddle? Any squidgy thing will do.
Two soft toy whales. One is dark blue. One is pale blue with script written on it, I think from Moby Dick.

I promised a ghost story from the castle where we used to live. It’s a grade one listed building in Worcestershire (on the cover of the Pevsner), on the site of a Benedictine convent that was destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries. The story? Next week.

Found a few lovely photos of the castle we used to live in a corner of! Someone’s selling one of the estate houses. Pretty. And probably rather cold. The trees though? Fantastic.
Aerial view of an Elizabethan hunting lodge. Basically a big brick square with squared off brick turrets on each corner. Lots of trees all around, and a stupid amount of land. It looks dead fancy. It was jolly cold.
