A busy, civilised day: I had two separate meetings with chaps who both brought their dogs. And my cedar was looking particularly lovely to come home to.pic.twitter.com/bvH3U78y4c

@NicholasDCarter The version I've seen before is from xkcd of all places. I've used it in talks etc a lot over the years. https://xkcd.com/1338/ pic.twitter.com/WK5PgP8Rqh

There's a famous fictional portrait of the meeting between the middle-aged Burns and the boy Scott - with everyone else anachronistically looking on dumbstruck at this timeless encounter of geniuses.pic.twitter.com/075oXq0ZaD

This is the shot
@DefraGovUK chose to illustrate 'beautiful natural landscapes' in Northumberland. Good to see plenty of trees in the rest of the film though; hopefully the Great Northumberland Forest will add some more beauty, nature, texture. https://twitter.com/DefraGovUK/status/1222928247983345665 …pic.twitter.com/xJtUYeMS6H

Great stuff! The tree they show looks a bit browsed...pic.twitter.com/3iwUFCvrFj

I was looking up a hotly contested 30 hectare afforestation proposal near Kielder, and was struck by the treeless hills to the southwest and then the placenames…. and then Caron Newman's thesis which discusses what its tree cover might have been: https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/6ddb/bb5c5d229d1a7f1cba124be367cdf7725fc2.pdf …pic.twitter.com/Ja0rqzzTRT

The
@WoodlandTrust Emergency Tree Plan provides a great policy introduction and overview of how trees can deliver for the nature and climate emergencies, and what we need to do to let them. https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/media/47692/emergency-tree-plan.pdf …pic.twitter.com/s0nbOrHbQ5

At the Harris Burns Night we "piped" in the haggis in grand procession round the sitting room with Scotland the Brave: me (who had the words) singing a line and everyone chorusing it back. General consensus they are excellent and not sung often enough.pic.twitter.com/Idp5pDAFsa

Afternoon frolics with a frog, at Beecraigs Country Park. Thanks
@island_rebecca for the company and@CountrysideBen for the route. Great big 1920s spruce, a woodpecker, and that brilliant foxtaily moss whose name I've forgotten. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lothian/beecraigs-cockleroy.shtml …pic.twitter.com/lvDzOXzKKN

I wouldn't have moved from conservation into forestry if I didn't love spruce forests. Go inside one this weekend: count the types of moss, look at winter gnats in the air, listen to birds in the canopy. It's not just foresters who are biased - you need to make your own mind up.pic.twitter.com/XcYdN409Ut

The privet hedge by my bus stop has produced berries, and I've never seen this before

This is something to do with the science of getting a bigger tree canopy to make your timber grow faster (also creating more carbon sequestration and more biodiversity habitat). But beyond being glad some egghead forester is working on this, I've given up trying to understand it.pic.twitter.com/d7KYiFbzAW

Browsing the latest forestry research - the maple syrup scientists are having a war of witty titles

How do people relate to, and adapt their behaviour towards, biodiversity? We're trying out a game from Anja Byg at
@JamesHuttonInst to find out. It would be interesting to try this out with foresters.pic.twitter.com/W7zDkzEZu7

Must eat more eggs... (Also works well with agroforestry)
