History time! So you all have heard of Chippendales, the “male exotic dancers” that were primarily big in the 70s and 80s, right? You’ve probably seen the SNL sketch.
BuzzFeed News closure is so sad. Wonderfully talented people are losing their jobs, but managements inability to pivot is mind boggling. People are STILL connecting the brand with cheese quizzes instead of Pulitzers? They shut down audio when they had a lead on everyone? Shameful
i know the podsquad was a million years ago but as an exampe: we had ANOTHER ROUND and SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING and THIRST AID KIT and they just CHOSE NOT TO SELL ADS and then laid off our team because we "weren't profitable" lol give me a break jo jo
In case it isn’t obvious, I’m looking for a new job after 10 years!
Please hire me! I’m very good at reporting the news, particularly investigation and finding people. I’ve produced definitive coverage on online extremism. Also, I write viral stories about the royal family.
Breaking News: BuzzFeed is shutting down its news division, BuzzFeed News, as part of an effort to cut the company’s work force by 15%, the chief executive said. https://nyti.ms/41nXMOh
i honestly have no idea what to say rn -- i started at buzzfeed fresh out of college and have been here nearly 8 years. i love the work i do and my coworkers in a way that made me feel so lucky. spent years fighting for our union contract. this fuckin hurts. job leads hmu i guess
, I had the chance to dive into the stories that made up Prince’s life. The first episode is all about how Prince became the international superstar we all know today: https://cnn.it/3L6qDkG
BuzzFeed News, which won a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting in 2019, is shutting down. https://latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2023-04-20/buzzfeed-is-shutting-down-its-award-winning-news-division…
. I've spent 7+ years of my career working alongside the most talented and generous people in journalism. We changed the culture. We changed laws. Hire them all.
A portion of my note from today:
Over $10,000 have already been donated to save CC's family's home ("an all-too-rare example of homeownership by many generations of free Black Americans")!
If all of my followers gave just $6 each, this fundraiser would meet its goal and the Pettiford home would be saved.
It’s that time of year, folks! Cis people, please consider pitching in so trans people don’t have to pass the same $20 around to each other like we usually do! Small kindnesses go a long way.
hey babes, Trans Day of Having a Nice Snack is on Friday, and over at @gendereveal, we're gonna be buying snacks and sending mutual aid $$ to trans folks who could really use a lil break!!! (Visibility schmizability lol.)
If you want to pitch in a few bucks, now's a great time
Even though NPR has decided to discontinue the Louder Than A Riot pod after this season and lay off our production team, our team members have graciously agreed to finish out this season for now. Cause, like us, they believe these stories are way too important not to be told.
CALLOUT: A GOODBYE EPISODE. For Invisibilia’s final episode, we’d love to hear your stories about saying goodbye. Send us a short email/voice note with the subject line GOODBYE to invisibiliamail@npr.org. Deadline: Monday, April 3. Some prompts ... 🧵
Hey everyone. @NPRinvisibilia is truly moved by all the support. Thank you.
A clarification: NPR did (fortunately) offer reassignments to most of our team. But some of us were laid off including @neenpathak

I was also incredibly lucky to work with @neenpathak who is one of the most thoughtful and kind people I have ever met in my life. Despite deadlines cutting off all the exits, we had so much fun helping birth @imontheradio’s beautiful story https://spotify.link/I2gnGykbuyb

One of the worst things about these layoffs is seeing a familiar pattern of "wanting to speak to a younger, more diverse audience" while shifting resources away from work that does exactly that.
The hardest part is that our szn is about misogynoir queer, trans, Black women face in hip-hop. Yet w/in NPR, the majority impacted in these layoffs were queer, poc staff & programs. NPR has claimed qtpoc ppl are the same ppl they are trying to reach with their "North Star". 3/4

You've all heard about the NPR layoffs by now and are rightly mourning and raging about the specifics of these cuts. I have a very personal tribute to pay and that's to

It is a singular show about music, culture, and justice. Their latest season - about misogynoir and marginalization in hip-hop - is already a triumph. Read about this team (
fr yall need to know how Realer Than Real this team is:
@manosundaresan, who produced today's ep on the legendary MC Sha-Rock, is one of the best writers I know. Incisive storyteller, literally the future of culture-shaping music jrnlism https://npr.org/2023/03/21/1164986756/baby-girl-youre-only-funky-as-your-last-cut-mc-sha-rock…
has published some of its best and far-ranging work. Frankly, I'm worried about the pace and quality of that work going forward, but for now, a thread...
You haven't heard our editor @neenpathak in our stories but she is the secret force behind ALL of them. With thoughtfulness, clarity & joie in her edits, reporting guidance, & show-running. Here's a story she shepherded and made 1 million times better: https://tinyurl.com/58smy59z
Stunned at what NPR is signaling with these layoffs, about POC talent and the value of telling non-white centric stories, and about audio that isn’t churned out on a weekly basis but takes time to make with deeply intentional arcs and themes. This is such a sad day in podcasting.
Hurting and heartbroken for the incredibly talented folks that NPR is letting go of this week. If any NPR folks want to talk freelance story editing or just the indie landscape in general please don't hesitate to reach out, I'd love to offer help and encouragement.
This shitty NPR layoff week, a reminder that for every NPR person you have listened to and loved for years, there are a bunch more who make NPR news/podcasts even happen in the first place.
Anyway no matter who is hit, it’s going to be a major loss. SOLIDARITY, NPR FRIENDS.
