This has been a really fun one! challenging the wisdom that one needs a lot of data to do ML guided biodesign. In fact, if you have to choose, think about getting HQ small-N data aligned w your endpoint, vs HT proxy data. low-N ML now helps you succeed w the former!

A little-known fact: doing an internship in Systems Biology at Harvard involves having fun. For example, going whale watching together. Apply by Feb 9! This is a paid internship, and we cover accommodation. And boats.

vs today: "The kinds of work where you win by hacking bad tests will be starved of talent, and the kinds where you win by doing good work will see an influx of the most ambitious people."

As says, "the fact that the tests were unhackable was a lot of what attracted me to startups...one of the most striking things about startups is the degree to which you win by simply doing good work"

Without knowing it so clearly, this was the same issue on my mind back in 2015 when I decided that I wanted to do cutting edge science in vs in

So many potential applications beyond 16S... At the most basic level, this provides a way to sort a mixed population based on any variable sequence present in the cells be that a barcode, receptor, tail fiber, outer membrane protein...

Loved this approach the first time I saw it, now even better. Great approach to synthetic libraries and single molecule analysis

1/ Why do wide, random neural networks form Gaussian processes, *regardless of architecture*? Let me give an overview in case you are too lazy to check out the paper or the code . The proof has two parts…

+ work from MelissaKotterman & DavidOjala from DavidSchaffer's lab, NRG2014 review one of the first things I read on AAV. That and Grimm & Zolotukhin MolTher 2015 were a great intro to the field of AAV engineering and still are.
