Before reading Warfighting (Marine Corps Doctrinal Publication 1) I thought business was uncertain and risky and difficult. After reading Warfighting, I now think business is relatively certain, positively safe, and relatively easy. My god.

Related: There are two things I often hear Army people say: • No plan survives first contact with the enemy. • The enemy gets a vote. They definitely started as the traditional meaning of “enemy,” but get used more broadly. The enemy could be a natural disaster, a problem, etc

I’ve definitely heard of “no plan survives first contact with the enemy”, but Chapter 1 just drives home how deeply true and terrible and “wtf what happened?” it is, to a degree I’d not understood or internalised.

Reading some historical accounts is what did that for me… researched my grandfather’s WWII unit and found out that one night his company lost half their men to shelling. When the sun came up, he was now the commander at 23 years old. It makes me WTF to think about it.
