Counter-point to my observations about Rumelt’s Good Strategy Bad Strategy, from someone who has applied it. I’m updating ~20% ish in favour of the book, with a bigger update if I have more details.

Thread about Rumelt's Good Strategy, Bad Strategy, which I find helpful but others including @ejames_c don't. Criticism tends to be that it's not practical enough, or maybe lacks intellectual rigour. I’ve also found a lot of value in application of the book, primarily as a source of cases and as an actionable definition of “strategy” that can lead to real and coherent action.

IMO It’s helpful to recognize that the book is a reaction to fluffy, vague, and undifferentiated “corporate strategy” (see: Lords of Strategy by Kiechel). I go to Rumelt when I’m trying to steer folks out of that place and into something useful/actionable; not so much otherwise.
