Hypothesis: The red zone is for "note-taking" (as traditionally understood) - not particularly useful for learning and application The yellow to green zone is for "note-making" (per / #zettelkasten) - it's how you construct knowledge to be deeply and flexibly applied

I think it’s worth remembering that ‘studying’ in this context means ‘performance in exams’. For most people, in most careers, the pursuit of expertise / synthesis of new ideas / vocational performance is more important.
