I think it’s worth remembering that ‘studying’ in this context means ‘performance in exams’. For most people, in most careers, the pursuit of expertise / synthesis of new ideas / vocational performance is more important.

Yes! In a sense, this body of literature is answering the question "what can *teachers* do with students within the constraints of a schooling system to help them learn the prescribed curriculum".
