This might be a very weird thing to say (unless you've actually done layoffs before, and done them badly) but Brian Armstrong's layoff email is close to best practice as I've ever seen.
I'll likely be rereading it for years to come.

Honest Question - Do you think news like this should be announced to the world first before informing employees?

Doesn't the second para here says that the affected employees will get email in the next hour or so meaning that the public announcement was first before they got the email.

They also received this particular email first? Publishing this email verbatim after the internal email went out might mean not modifying indicated time? Individual emails telling you that “you, yea, YOU are laid off” are different?
