Richard Lawrence’s The Model opens with this arresting anecdote.
Welcome to South East Asia, I guess.

The whole opening is arresting in the same way watching a car crash is arresting.
Everyone from my cohort was affected by the crisis — my dad lost his job, and from a casual asking around, that story seems pretty common amongst my peers.

I mean, you don’t typically expect a story that opens with a beer company investment to go to ‘arms dealer in Hilton Jakarta’, but I guess these are the stories you get when rule of law is kinda … made up?

I’m upgrading this book (The Model, by Richard Lawrence) to a strong recommend — there’s a whole section on activist investing in Asia (!!!) that’s worth it for the price alone.

“There are basically five different types of public companies in China …”
(This is a setup for a bunch of funny stories, circa 2003).

“I wanted to discuss with you four specific hazards of investing in China’s new entrepreneurs.”
(Again, bear in mind that this is 2003; but I must say Want Want rice crackers are still amazing all these years later 🙃)
