That's called "Tacit Knowledge," and it can only be learned by experience. Apprenticeships can help give you models, but only experience teaches you the limits of those models:

I do love the examples in the essays, where the senior is saying, "I just KNOW," and it's really hard to put that knowledge into a junior's head. As a software developer, knowing WHEN to go mutable, or use a class, or to go async, is just... it feels right.
