As an aside, speaking as a person born and bred in the Nusantara, there’s nothing quite like the sudden strong fragrance of frangipani at night (smelt through your mask) to remind you that you should NOT be walking back to your hotel alone in the dark.

Oh, the smell of frangipani features heavily in the ghost stories of the region. Usually you smell the sweet smell of frangipani right before a ghost appears/attacks you

As a teenage I used to have to do security walkrounds at night in a deserted compound, and banana trees are frigging crazy scary at night.
