There's a story I heard about developing intuition that sounds neat, but I haven't been able to find an authoritative source for it. Can someone point me to a source that can confirm (or disconfirm) this story?

The story is that an organization (maybe the Royal Observer Corps?) tried to train people to recognize aircraft by giving them a list of rules, which often didn't result in people who were good at recognizing aircraft. They then tried to train people by having trainees hang out
