Your Federer example makes the opposite point to me. In his quote he says he can't hit a double-hander. Seems like he's doing it to win not because it's cool and avoiding a scrub heuristic of 'play like other people do'.

The details are more complicated. He never tried using it, because he learnt the classic style first, and then his (ridiculous) talent allowed him to continue using the one-handed backhand in the modern game.
For the longest time, it was considered his biggest weakness.
