1/ I want to call out what I think is the best part of the interview with John Danaher.
It's 1:08:52 to 1:25:00.
It has to do with 'what makes a great athlete?' — and you don't need any knowledge of Brazilian Jujitsu to understand it.

Did you listen to the next section about drilling? Lex talks about doing 1000x repetitions & "learning by feeling" VS being taught. Sense making once again! (& it's the same approach I prefer too)

Yes! Danaher pushes back on the idea.
It hit especially hard because Judo places special emphasis on uchikomi (throw repetitions). At this stage of my life I think I've done well over 5000 uchikomis of my favourite throws, and I suspect it's all wasted time.
I used to drill basketball religiously & had the same problem. Are you familiar with the beanbag study by Kerr & booth? They look into varied practice vs blocked practice (where blocked = simple drilling.)
Some conflicting evidence out there, been trying to make sense of it.

I'm not familiar with that study, but I recently finished routledge.com/Accelerated-Ex, where half the book was basically a lit review of expertise research circa 2016, and I'm familiar with the argument.
The main takeaway from the lit review is 'none of this generalises'.
