It's fun talking to because we crosspollinate libraries, in that he recommends me very sensible and interesting sounding books about expertise and culture that I obviously should have read, and I recommend him books about oranges and trickster myths.

I need to read more McPhee. So far I've only read Oranges and Draft No. 4, but I've been vaguely intending to just have a McPhee book on the go at all times because of how easy and pleasing he is to read.

Side note: Part of why this worked is that one of my "tricks" is that my reading habits are way less obscure than they seem. I mostly read reasonably well known books, just across a variety of unexpected fields.
(I do also read obscure books, but that's not the majority)
