It's fun talking to because we crosspollinate libraries, in that he recommends me very sensible and interesting sounding books about expertise and culture that I obviously should have read, and I recommend him books about oranges and trickster myths.

Well, "obviously should have read" isn't quite right. Sometimes should have read, sometimes should read but have never heard of because they come from an area of expertise he has and I don't.
