I think about this tweet a lot. If your base assumption is that any feature innovation you come up with will be copied in two weeks — what kind of company would you build?

In SV, companies fear FB going into lockdown to clone them, but China takes it to the next level. As a CEO there told me, if a competitor doesn’t copy something we ship within two weeks we question their competence. This CH clone shipped in…two weeks from CH going viral there.

Some kind of personal touch can be a big differentiator here, depending on the target market. Whether it’s great customer service, assisting in transferring old data, or helping to navigate complex issues that your customers face.

Partial (kind of cynical) answers could be: - kind that has big lobbying arm for regulatory capture - kind that is exceedingly well funded to scale immediately and capture a network - kind that is exceedingly well funded to acquire or litigate copycats to death

Less cynically: - something that has a strong branding component, a 'lifestyle' brand. Look to commodities like coffee roasters for direction - On the coffee analogy again - something that has a local component. Hometown coffee shop (app) vs Starbucks
