Is crypto research even a thing? If so, who are the best crypto researchers to read? (I mean this in both the tech sense as well as the finance sense).

Very little — I used to read a ton of distributed systems-type papers a few years ago, but that was all ad-hoc. I wasn't subscribing to anyone — and I thought that given the rise of Substack, maybe I should try again.

a16z.com/2018/02/10/cry – It's from a few years ago, but should still get you up to speed with the basics. Most of the authors are still active, so they probably published a lot of other good content
