Because what he’s trying to do is to teach ‘far transfer’ — one of the most difficult things to teach in pedagogy!

I'd be very interested to hear how it turns out! The folks at BJJ Mental Models are trying to do something that sounds similar for principles-based pedagogy for jujitsu- may be of interest, if you're not already familiar

That's very interesting. I really like those- I can see how they'd provide both a set of heuristics for what to do in the "ah, shit, what now" moment, and a framework for understanding what techniques are actually for.

From the BJJ models list, I found their list of mechanical concepts (alignment, 3-joint rule, etc.) helpful for organizing, and debugging individual techniques- the rest less so. That's from the perspective of a novice, however.
