The problem with this piece is that it sounds vaguely Machiavellian. defmacro.substack.com/p/how-to-inter The other problem with it is that it passes all my taste tests: it matches my experience with designing hiring systems for software engineers. Slava's process is likely to work.

(Of course, it goes without saying that his process is highly adapted to his context (US, hard database problems); if I were to apply it to Singapore or Vietnam, it would need to be modified. But that's true of every practically useful thing.)

You'll notice that Slava's second question (on testing judgment) is an effective filter for 'people who are 10x but make bad architectural decisions'. This is what makes Slava's process interesting to me. In the past, we've had to evaluate taste *after* hiring.

I've fired people who are decent programmers, but who are obstinate with bad taste (exactly as Slava describes). That he has a potentially workable filter for that, earlier in the hiring process, makes me sit up and pay attention.
