One of the things I keep beating my drum on is that everyone should understand the business models of their industry (and ESPECIALLY their company's!)
Understanding how businesses works gives context to observations about said company. Makes career moves a heck of a lot easier!

Another one: let's say you grok profit centres & cost centres. And you get that software is seen as a cost centre in certain companies.
You notice an old-school company doing 'digital transformation'. It's driven by 'Jon'.
Jon leaves. What does this mean for the IT jobs there?

All of these seem really basic if you're familiar with businesses, or been around a bit.
But I was talking to a dev in his late-20s the other day, and many of these ideas seemed novel to him.
I'm really not sure why.
