FWIW, I find that teasing the principle by going through a few examples before the reveal to be quite effective. Leverages the human ability to generate patterns.

Another cool idea is to use formative assessment during teaching, though I think you might already know this: you throw out a multiple choice question and get students to raise their hands; which answer they pick tells you what mistaken mental model they currently hold.
