One relatively easy way to improve critical thinking while reading:
Whenever you encounter a claim, see if you can generate JUST ONE counter example. If so, it can be quite illuminating:
- Are there conditions the author is leaving out?
- Is the author wrong?
- How to find out?

another one I had in mind immediately is questioning the analogies: they are often deployed in writing to help situate the author’s viewpoint against broader worldview, but can be based on a connecting principle that is unstable
