I went back to this 1992 Steve Jobs lecture at MIT Sloan and unexpectedly found a whole section on lean manufacturing at the end: buff.ly/3h5Mve7 "Warehouses are bad. Inventory is bad. (...) And automated machines are basically (the equivalent of) warehouses."

The other really interesting thing you learn from this timeline is that Jobs hired Cook to run the supply chain (meaning manufacturing and JIT up to all the suppliers, which is a Toyota thing) in 1998. But he had been thinking about this since at least 1992.
