And also how difficult it was to teach — Ohno resorted to socialisation, not explicit instruction. Suppliers that were located further away were the last to adopt kanban, simply because it was too troublesome for them to send staff over to Toyota to learn!

10 years to implement, and then 10 years to get suppliers to implement … good god. No wonder Hamilton Helmer puts this as one of his ‘Powers’ in 7 Powers.
