That's interesting. The memory palace technique features prominently in Moon Walking with Einstein book. Don't think it's very important for general memorisation though.

I like the movie analogy.
I wonder how much of the recall that people struggle with today is not so much “have I seen this before and what happens next” but “what year was this movie made and what are the real names of the stars and also of the director and screenwriter”

I often play this game when watching movies with my housemates:
"Where have we seen this familiar-looking but not famous actor before?"
That's when I realized I have an above average sense of recognizing faces & pinpointing the shows the actor was in
