The bright side spin on this is that Scott himself believes that there’s something ineffably magical about marriages that work, but we don’t know what it is, nor do we have a good criterion for when you should quit a terrible one.

He's not as harsh because he wants Gottman to work but if you read between the lines, there's basically zero credible evidence for all of Gottman's claims.
Which is a bummer, I remember reading the book as a teenager and being very influenced by it.
