I wrote a thing. I'm not sure if it's a good thing, because this is the first time I've articulated it in writing.
Nevertheless, I believe the idea of metagame = expertise to be true, and I hope you find it useful. commoncog.com/blog/to-get-go

Some essays are easy. But the hard ones are *really* hard to write.

All pg essays are pretty good, but I thought this one was great.
Probably resonated a little more because I’m currently stuck on the editing phase of an essay. twitter.com/paulg/status/1…

Richard Garfield (creator of Magic The Gathering) has a paper on metagames that I thought was quite interesting to read: 0gamestechsociety.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/2000-g
His definition of the metagame is far broader, but still useful given his role as game designer.

1/ This was a thoughtful read. Have you looked into the idea of "wicked" fields and "kind" fields of learning? I do still tend to think that mastering the fundamentals are much easier in kind fields (board games, Judo) where rules are better defined to get to the meta stage.

2/ The meta game is much more difficult to fathom in wicked fields. (btw, this idea of kind and wicked fields is by Kahneman), since even the fundamentals are hard.
I think you will find looking into this topic very interesting, and in sharp contrast to Erikson's "Peak".
