My current pet theory is that people who spent their teens in the pursuit of beautiful personal writing (even if it’s really purple teenage angst) turn out to be better adult writers than those who don’t.

This is nothing more than a pet theory, but I’d like to think that all serious writers go through a phase where they attempt to dress up their writing a bit.
