I've been struggling with the notion that expertise is 'simply' pattern matching. And yet it seems to have resulted in better learning outcomes in the previous year. A reflection on the challenges of this belief:

I have the book working minds by beth crandall and inside it cites a 2004 paper by Klein and Militello and they distinguish 5 key elements that distinguish experts from beginners. there’s one element that resonates with your concepts of pattern matching.

I couldn’t find the DOI. My best search led me to a chapter in 100plus dollar book in google scholar. where of course you don’t get to see the whole chapter
