I've been struggling with the notion that expertise is 'simply' pattern matching. And yet it seems to have resulted in better learning outcomes in the previous year. A reflection on the challenges of this belief:

I have the book working minds by beth crandall and inside it cites a 2004 paper by Klein and Militello and they distinguish 5 key elements that distinguish experts from beginners. there’s one element that resonates with your concepts of pattern matching.

FWIW, Crandall is one of Klein’s collaborators. (She was the one who ran the study on the NCU nurses.) This definition of expertise is also found in Sources of Power!
So … I think you can actually skip reading the paper, since Crandall of the original authors in the group 😬

might be nitpicking but this exact breakdown of expertise into 5 cognitive elements is not in the sources of power book (1999) which I have.
SoP does mention detecting patterns and anomalies and perceptual learning
