I have the book working minds by beth crandall and inside it cites a 2004 paper by Klein and Militello and they distinguish 5 key elements that distinguish experts from beginners. there’s one element that resonates with your concepts of pattern matching. /1

Document object identifier. Every paper has one. Once you've got it (by Googling for the paper name + authors), you plug that into whereisscihub.now.sh/go and it'll do some highly illegal things and you have your paper.
